As you may have noticed, the bookshops in The Norwegian Booktown were literaly unharmed from the winter storm Dagmar on Christmas Day 2011. However, our smallest bookshop fell to the power of the tempest. “Sjølvplukken”, the well-known and well-loved Honesty Bookshop in the middle of Mundal, had to be cleared away – but don’t worry, we love this small, charming bookshelf as much as you do, so of course we’ll put up a new one! Come May, you’ll once more be able to pick up a Barbara Cartland you haven’t read for a measley tenner (in Norwegian Krone, that is).

After the severe weather (dubbed “Dagmar”) in Norway 25 to 26 December, we can so far say that The Norwegian Booktown came out of it quite well. The storm centre was off the coast of Norway, and we had unusually strong wind here in Fjærland. Although several buildings were damaged and most of the infrastructure here was affected (roads, electricity, internet, landbased and mobile telephones, broadcast radio), our bookshops and buildings coped rather well.

Because of the two days without electricity and internet, a few book orders have had to wait. We are back in business today, and will be shipping all orders shortly.

Most people in Fjærland were quite well prepared for the storm, and none suffered serious mishaps or fell gravely ill during the storm, as far as we know. The local elderly home had to be evacuated due to lack of heating, but things are back to normal today. However, “Dagmar” did quite a bit of harm to buildings, power lines and forest patches, and we feel sorry for those who suffered damage to their houses and property.

Do you happen to know Italian? Good. Are you familiar with the concept of The Norwegian Booktown? Perfect! Radio24, an Italian radio station, has requested an interview about the booktown Thursday 8 April 2011, of course in Italian. If you can help out, we would be very happy to hear from you.

In The Norwegian Booktown, we don’t sleep through winter. We are at the office by the ferry quay in Mundal, eager to help, all through winter. Whether you come by yourself or with a group, we’ll do our best to help you find what you want. If you would rather wait until our shops open again 1 May next year, you will find everything in best order for serious book-browsing: Over 3 miles of shelving, with books clearly organised, and everything tidied up.

"Pour un basier", Caruso...

One aspect Booktown life is to receive and revive surplus books and other odds and ends. Sometimes, people donate highly unusual objects to us, quite apart from second-hand books. This time, we have been lucky to get a number of old records, aging from the beginning of the last century and to around WWII. Most of them run at 78 RPM speed, and some are quite unique in other ways too: The pictured record is engraved on one side only, and one Norwegian record from 1909 is engraved from the centre out!

These are just some of the many rare and unusual objects you can get by contacting us or showing up at our Winter book-fair 1 December. A very seldom opportunity indeed!
